Maritime Glossary

Common terms used in the shipping agency and marine logistics industry.

GTGross Tonnage
A measure of a vessel's total enclosed volume, used as the basis for classification and port-fee calculations — not a measure of weight.
NTNet Tonnage
A measure of a vessel's cargo-earning volume, typically smaller than its Gross Tonnage.
LOALength Overall
A vessel's overall length, measured from the tip of the bow to the tip of the stern.
BreadthBeam
A vessel's maximum width, measured at the widest point of the hull.
DepthDepth
The vertical distance from a vessel's keel to its main deck.
TugboatTugboat
A powerful vessel used to tow or push other ships or barges, particularly during port maneuvering or long-distance towage.
Tongkang (Barge)
A flat-hulled vessel without its own propulsion, used to carry bulk or general cargo and towed by a tugboat.
Shipping AgencyShipping Agency
A service representing a vessel owner/operator's interests at port — coordinating documentation, port authorities, and operational needs while the ship is alongside.
Freight Forwarding
The arrangement of cargo transport from shipper to consignee, including route planning, transport mode, and logistics coordination.
Port Call
A vessel's visit to a port for loading/unloading, refueling, or other operational purposes, spanning arrival through departure.
Vessel Attendance
Operational support provided by a shipping agent while a vessel is in port, ensuring the ship's needs are met and its schedule runs smoothly.
Charter
The hire of a vessel (tugboat, barge, or other vessel type) for a defined period or voyage.
Manifest
The official list of all cargo carried aboard a vessel on a given voyage, used for customs and documentation purposes.
Pandu (Pilot)
A licensed officer who boards a vessel to guide its navigation into or out of complex port waters.
NIBBusiness Identification Number
A business identity number issued through Indonesia's OSS (Online Single Submission) system, serving as the base business license.
SIUPALSea Transportation Company Business License
The core operating permit for a company conducting sea transportation business in Indonesia.
KBLIIndonesian Standard Industrial Classification
Indonesia's official code system for classifying business activities, recorded on a company's Standard Certificate.
BKIIndonesian Classification Bureau
Indonesia's national ship classification society, setting and surveying technical and seaworthiness standards for vessels.
